Out of it, in raw cadmium yellow laid on thick, figures surface one at the centre with its hands raised to its face, others scattered across the windows and fire escapes like sparks. The yellow is the only light in the painting and it reads as sound. Munch's cry moved uptown. Here the scream is not one face but a whole building answering at once. An
